Background

A major Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for aerospace and defense companies houses a library of over 5,700 component maintenance manuals that require consistent revisions. The revisions are based on fleet issue data and engineering developments. This library currently supports various in-service aircraft.

One of the critical business requirements for the project is to ensure that the manuals reach the air fleet promptly. It is worth noting that timely maintenance of aircraft is vital for defense capabilities and flight safety. Additionally, The contract for the maintenance of the library stipulates a 104-day service level agreement for the work and imposes financial penalties if the work is not completed within the agreed timeframe. Multiple suppliers both domestic and offshore, previously attempted to work the effort and have failed. The contractors missed the milestones, quality suffered, and the end customers were not happy. That’s where the OEM bought RCM Technology onboard.

The Challenge

RCM quickly identified why previous suppliers failed. With so many different milestones and various inputs required, the manuals were always in a constant cycle of starts and stops. This led to many of the updates getting lost in the revision life cycle. Once a single milestone was late, it caused others to be rushed in order to try and meet the original schedule.

The RCM Solution

The RCM Aerospace & Defense team swiftly identified and allocated the right resources and developed a new project execution plan. We productionized the effort. This method allowed our resources to focus on specific areas of the overall revision lifecycle. These areas consisted of an initial authoring team, customer and engineering contact coordinators, quality and metrics lead, final production team, and two overall project coordinators. We applied automation for all QA forms and status reporting. Custom triggers enabled us to ensure that nothing fell through the cracks. RCM is pleased to say that through these initiatives we were able to reduce the turnaround time for each revision by 52% compared to the contractual requirement that was previously often exceeded. Quality also drastically improved. The aerospace and defense companies that the OEM supports were very pleased.

The Background: The US military awarded a major OEM with a contract to provide a next-generation rotary aircraft. The chosen company had a requirement to deliver a full Organizational-Level Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) using S1000D 4.02

The Challenge: RCM was challenged to fulfill the requirement of providing the OEM with ~20,000 BREX compliant S1000D Data Modules within a constrained schedule for a new development program, while the OEM continued to engineer and test the platform.

The Solution: RCM performed the majority of S1000D required granularity maintenance planning needed to author all the procedures in XML, whilst creating interactive, hot-spot graphics to accompany the procedure. RCM was pleased to have met all schedule and budget requirements throughout the 5-year effort and continues to provide in-service support requirements.

A major aircraft OEM that had received a several billion-dollar contract to design a new, all composite, military aircraft approached RCM for manpower and management support. The OEM did not have the resources available to execute the contract because of other competing programs.

The OEM contracted RCM to perform the majority of the Airframe Basic Data and Preliminary Design / Structural Analysis phase of the contract. Marketplace resource availability was constrained because the Statement of Work (SOW) required an all-composite airframe to be designed using Composites Part Design (CPD), a virtually new software.

Additionally, all designers and analysts needed familiarity with the new concept of working within a Digital Mock-Up (DMU). To the delight of the customer, RCM ultimately (and quickly) staffed approximately 65 engineers to successfully complete the contract. RCM complemented their existing staff by recruiting approximately 40 engineers of all levels of experience. RCM proudly completed the project on schedule and within budget.

Renewable Fuels Large-scale Pilot Plant /resources/featured-projects/renewable-fuels-large-scale-pilot-plant/ Mon, 26 Jul 2021 01:32:00 +0000 /?p=6613 See how Thermal Kinetics helped SYNPET with a large-scale renewable fuels pilot plant project.

The post Renewable Fuels Large-scale Pilot Plant appeared first on RCM Technologies.

]]>
The Background: Thermal Kinetics partnered with SYNPET Technologies to provide design, engineering, equipment and commissioning services for a renewable fuels large scale pilot plant.

This unique process produced a clean fuel oil, fuel gas, fertilizer, and biochar. Thermal efficiency exceeded 85% of the heating value of the feed stock recovered as fuel products utilizing municipal waste, sludge, and plastics as the feed.

The Challenge: The broad range of feed sent to the plant required a robust design of front-end material handling equipment and a means to transfer this feed to very high pressure reactors with heat recovery to enable the required thermal efficiency. Ensuring that the changes to the feed could be managed on the back-end recovery processes without recovery capacity reductions was another project focus.

The Solution: Thermal Kinetics’ engineers were involved in process development and design discussions from project infancy to completion. As a member of the design team at the earliest stage it allowed TK to implement process changes during this ‘process development’ stage. In this stage the bench-scale testing under Thermal Kinetics’ guidance provided the full range of parameters that the full-scale pilot plant would need to be able to operate. The Thermal Kinetics systems operated as designed and provided SYNPET with a plant that can manage the variability of Feed and consequently the variability of Products. SYNPET now is taking this capability to the next stages of business development to solve municipal waste management challenges in a fully environmentally friendly approach.

For a client in the Midwest, our scope of work included the addition of two (2) new 138kV bus tie circuit breakers to split the 138kV main buses into four busses.

Substation

We also replaced five (5) existing 138kV breakers with new Siemens 138kV circuit breakers. Several corresponding sets of switches have also been replaced, along with other electrical equipment.

A new Drop In Control Module (DICM) has been installed consisting of a 16’ x 36’ base with a 16’ x 24’ expansion unit. New cable trench design has been required to accommodate new wiring for complete station into new DICM control building.

This project included engineering and design for civil, electrical physical layout, grounding and lightning protection systems. Civil design included design of equipment support steel framing and concrete.

Due to the age and condition of the station, RCM performed 3D scanning to collect accurate and exact data of the existing yard regarding dimensions and overall physical layout. A 3D Point Cloud was used during the design stage to incorporate custom solutions to accommodate new equipment while ensuring constructability and a high safety environment.

An integrated design approach incorporating the use of a 3D model of the station has been utilized to collaborate with our client. Included in this approach is the creation of a 4D model which incorporates the 3D model of the station with the construction schedule as well as the creation of safety animations and work sequence animations.
